Chair-Elect
Amy Balija

I am honored to be nominated as a candidate for Chair-Elect. Our local section has a legacy of hosting successful educational, social, and outreach activities. Coming out of the pandemic, our section has expanded its programming to include in-person, virtual, and social events to include more members. We must build upon this foundation to create a local section that welcomes our diverse memberships.
I have a track-record of leading positive, collaborative teams to create opportunities that positively impact diversity, equity, inclusion, and respect (DEIR) for all individuals within the ACS.
As Chair of the national Women Chemists Committee,
As an Associate Member of the national Membership Affairs Committee,
As Lecturer at Loyola University Chicago,
As Chair-Elect, I look forward to engaging the members and community in the Chicago ACS local section by advancing the ACS Core Value of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Respect.
If elected, I promise to work for the best interests of the Chicago section members. By establishing a welcoming environment, we can create a strong community for chemists.

Nicolas Gerst

If elected to the role of Chair-Elect of the Chicago ACS section, I will support our current section's programs, activities, and community outreach events. Also, I will pay attention to our section membership and look for initiatives and opportunities to grow our membership.
The Chicago ACS section has a lot to offer in terms of networking, education, and information in the World of Chemistry. As Chair-Elect, I would continue the recent initiative to change some of our events to appeal to different cohorts of our section members. Taking advantage of remote meetings (introduced during the pandemic), I would encourage meetings or contacts with other local scientific organizations and other ACS sections.
A native of France, I came to the US for a post-doctoral position and stayed to work in a pharmaceutical company on drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics.

I am honored to be a candidate for Vice-Chair of the Chicago Section. The position of Vice-Chair is an important responsibility in the event of a temporary or permanent absence of the Chair. I believe the Board and our committees should mirror the diversity of the Chicago Section's membership including race, gender identity and expression, age, and educational attainment. Our Board needs to commit to cultivating a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and respectful community of chemical professionals in making successful decisions for the longevity of the Section and its members. This can be achieved by working together in providing programs and opportunities which benefit all of our members, students and the community around us.

The success of the Chicago Section depends on the smooth flow of information and solid recordkeeping. Board activities must be recorded and shared, and the board takes authoritative action on a number of matters. All these activities rely on the Secretary to keep communications orderly, timely, and accurate. The position requires close work with the Chair, all the Committee Chairs, the Office Manager, and National ACS. Having served as Secretary in 2010, 2022, and as an ad hoc substitute many times in between, I am quite familiar with the job, especially its operational electronic resources. If elected, I would ensure all operations are carried out efficiently to support the impact of the Section’s work. Thank you for your consideration.

I am honored to be considered as a candidate for Director. This role promotes my lifelong interest in science literacy and in particular chemical literacy. It is of the utmost importance to replace the negative perception of chemistry held by some with the wonderment that chemistry brings to the world around us. I will continue to advance our mission through supporting existing programs, activities, and community outreach events.
My role as the CSM, Pharma allows for my accessibility to experts in our field. This will facilitate our recruitment of highly knowledgeable lecturers for our ACS conferences and monthly meetings. Consequently, ACS will continue to receive their well-deserved admiration.

Kshitish (KP) Patankar

My name is Kshitish Patankar and I am applying for the position of Director. Although I have no prior experience with the Chicago section, I was involved in the Local Section in Midland, MI for a number of years before moving to the Chicago area. Since moving to this area, I was looking for an opportunity to be connected with the Section again and this election has provided me with one.
My involvement began with the volunteer activities and advanced through a more direct engagement later on. I was Secretary of the Section for a number of years before becoming Director. Through the years, I was actively engaged in various projects across the Section.
I hope to bring the same passion to the Chicago Section.

My long-term research objective is to foster drug discovery with a focus on human health. I have led projects involving infectious and neurodegenerative diseases, natural products research, and cancer chemoprevention. Over the past decade, I have launched new programs that support students of color and other historically marginalized scholars, with a focus on those careers in STEM and the biomedical sciences. I think it is important for the ACS, especially during the current political climate, to promote a greater sense of belonging and relevancy to careers in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering for scientists from diverse backgrounds, and to ensure greater representation of women in Chemistry.

ACS has shaped my professional identity every step of the way through my education. I took the standardized ACS exams in undergrad, found opportunities at conferences, and was inspired to become a chemist in the first place through involvement in my student chapter. Though I only recently joined the local section and recently became the Social Media subcommittee chair, I am honored to be nominated to serve as a director for our local section and to give back to ACS as ACS has helped me. My vision is to cultivate a welcoming community of our local chemists. I hope to bring a youthful, positive, and inclusive voice to our section.

Local Section Councilors express the will of Section members when ACS Council decides the future of our professional society. Since becoming Councilor in 2022, I have helped decide many issues, from dues-setting to professional conduct, but I have paid special attention to inclusivity. I have supported international voices in ACS, such as adding the International Division Director to the ACS board, creating Global Electoral Zones, and adding several International Chemical Sciences Chapters. Informally, I have leveraged proximity to ACS leaders to advocate for LGBTQ safety at national meetings and for greater accessibility for chemists with disabilities. If re-elected, I plan to continue these efforts. Thank you for your consideration.

I would be honored to Serve the Chicago section as a councilor voicing at the ACS Council meetings, the views of our Section’s members on matters of interest to our Section. It’s important that you exercise your vote in the election of your local ACS Section’s officers, and that you communicate with them and tell them what you want from your local Section and from the national level. Since previously serving as an alternate Councilor for 3 terms, I have attended nearly all of the ACS National Meetings over the past 15 years. It’s been my observation, that the ideas and opinions that are voiced at Council really do guide the course of the Society’s activities and development. Vote!

As Councilor I will contribute to decisions under discussion by the ACS, to build relationships with like-minded chemists, and to assist the section in implementing the society's values and goals. Having served in various roles in the section, I have enjoyed numerous collaborations with fellow section members and success in getting new members involved. I would like to thank the committee and the Board for nominating me for Alternative councilor. I am truly honored and humbled. I am a self-motivated individual who has the time and energy to give to be able to represent our section at the National meetings. I am active on our Board and been on a variety of committees for Poly / PMSE and CHED. I believe my experience gives me insight on how the organization runs and does things. I am also an associate member of CCA. I would be able to support the efforts of our Section at the national level and provide a unique perspective by being a High School teacher. I would do my best to help ACS move forward and be able to promote and support the views of the section.
