    Illustrated Poem Contest

    The Chicago Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is sponsoring an illustrated poem contest for students in Kindergarten - 12th grade.

    Contest Deadline: All entrees must be received by Monday, April 24th, 2017 to be considered.

    Prizes: To be determined

    Contact: Entries must be Emailed to Include completed entry form with each submission

    Winners of the Chicago illustrated poem contest will advance to the ACS National Illustrated Poem Contest!

    Inspire the next generation of STEM professionals

    Join us at the DuPage Area STEM Expo (formerly known as DuPage Area Engineers Week) for an interactive exploration into science, technology, engineering and math. Over 50 displays, presentations, projects to take home and activities for school age children, grades K – 6.

    The DuPage Area STEM Expo, in conjunction with national Engineers Week, is a specialized event designed to promote the awareness of professional and educational opportunities provided among engineering and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields.

    Some things to do at the Expo:

    • Explore the explosive power of Nitrogen and cryogenics at the infamous Mr. Freeze show
    • Visit the American Chemical Society Table for a preview of 2017 Earth week
    • Visit this hands-on shake table and construct an “earthquake resistant” LEGO® skyscraper
    • NEW! Construct a Nakamura Lock Paper Airplane with Engineering for Kids
    • Experience a hands-on modern fire detection and alarm simulation
    • Join Chicago Area Vision Makers, DuPage Children’s Museum, Zoom into Engineering, LEGO® Robotics , Working Bikes and more for hands-on STEM exploration activities!

    Free, and open to the public

    All ages welcome 

    The NCW 2016 theme is "Solving Mysteries Through Chemistry", focusing on the chemistry of forensics - things like detecting gunpowder and explosives at crime scenes, analyzing DNA (everyone's molecular fingerprint), and solving art mysteries like "seeing" a painting that was painted over a hundred years ago.

    Public Transportation: The closest CTA station is the Loyola Red line stop. The 147 CTA bus also stops there.

    Parking: Paid parking available in the main garage (P!) across from Flanner Hall, or at the Fordham structure(P2). Street parking may also be available.


    Poetry Contest

    Each year as part of National Chemistry Week (NCW) activities, the American Chemical Society (ACS) sponsors an illustrated poem contest for students in Kindergarten - 12th grade. The Chicago Section is participating this year.  Deadline for submisions will be October 24th.

    Community Activities Committee

    The Community Activities Committee organizes outreach events, including the local celebration of National Chemistry Week.  It helps coordinate and publicize Chemistry Week activities in the Chicago Section and work with the National Chemistry Week office as part of the overall outreach activities for the Section.  More info.
