ABSTRACT
The solar energy sector is growing exponentially. The expanding solar workforce and growing customer base entails dire need for public awareness and skill development in solar energy. In this respect, the wider accessibility of solar energy science in middle- and high-school curricula bodes well. With this goal in mind, we have designed science experiments for students to make functional solar panels using a variety of materials and methods. Students not only gain understanding of fundamental principles and cross-cutting concepts, but also of the various science and engineering practices. I will describe the fabrication of dye-sensitized and organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells, and discuss implementation of these experiments into classroom. I will share my experience working with educators and students worldwide, but in particular, at Northwestern General Chemistry laboratory.

PRE-DINNER WORKSHOP
Solar electricity production has witnessed an exponential growth in recent years. To make solar energy science widely accessible, we have designed an experiment to easily and cheaply build solar panels using household ingredients. The multidisciplinary experiment provides hands-on learning in science, engineering and design. During the workshop, participants will make solar cells, assemble cells into functional solar panels, and use it to power electronic devices under (sun)light. Participants will work in groups to discuss lesson plan and assessment design.
Solar cell kit is free to the first 50 registered teachers (Grades 6-12)!
Solar cell kit is $20 for registered ACS and AIChE members, and $40 for non-members.
POSTER SESSION
Undergraduates will present posters describing their research, and the best one will win a prize! Register here if you wish to present a poster:
