Education Night: "Effects of Environmental Contaminants on Microorganisms in Wastewater Treatment Systems" by Toni Glymph-Martin, PLUS Student Posters, WCC Non-traditional Career Event, and Scholarship Presentations

    September 23, 2016

    Loyola University - Cuneo Hall
    1064 West Sheridan Road
    Chicago, IL 606600

Over the years, society has produced millions of tons of different environmental pollutants including pharmaceuticals, personal care products and antibiotics, many of which persist in soil and water.  Due to limitations in the techniques of disposal at the point of use, low levels of these pollutants enter domestic wastewater and must be removed. Wastewater treatment systems utilize specially-suited microorganisms (bacteria, protozoa and metazoa) to remove organic wastes from the water. Environmental contaminants affect the the decontamination efficiency of these microorganisms. At the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Chicago, we aim to provide the safest, cleanest possible water by studying how environmental contaminants affect our microorganisms and learning how to make them most efficient. This presentation will include live videos of microorganisms commonly found in the wastewater treatment process, emphasize the positive role of these microorganisms in removing organic contaminants, and describe some of the observed microbial responses to toxins in the wastewater.

Loyola Student Research Poster Session and
    WCC Non-Traditional Career Discussions

Starting at 5:00, there will be a poster session in the lobby outside room 107 of Cuneo Hall where Loyola students will showcase their research. Also In the poster area, the Women Chemists Committee of the ACS Chicago Section will have a casual event where chemists with non-traditional careers will meet with students and other attendees to discuss their career paths and the education required to pursue them. If you have an interesting career, let us know beforehand, and we would be pleased to include you as a presenter ([email protected]).

The top performers on our annual High School Scholarship exam will be recognized in a ceremony immediately prior to our evening's main talk. The sum of scholarships totals over $15,000, and smaller honoraria will also be given to the teachers of the prize winning students. For the full list of schaolarship recipients, click here.
