Younger Chemists Committee (YCC)

    Objective: The Younger Chemists Committee of the Chicago Section of the American Chemical Society mission is to identify the needs and concerns of younger chemists and develop programs responsive to these needs. By cultivating communication and interaction between Chicago area young chemists, YCC hopes to broaden not only the horizons of our members but of those around us.

    2017 Tentative Event Schedules / Details

    1) “St Patrick's Day Happy Hour”                                                                      Date: March 17th,2017

    Location: Wheatstack (5900 S. Route 53, Lisle, IL 60532)

    Description — the Chicago YCC's social networking happy hour after the ACS March dinner meeting held at Benedictine University

     

    (2) “Chemistry Food & Tonics”                                               Date: starts around 9pm, April 21st, 2017 

    Location: Bar 63 (6341 North Broadway, Chicago, IL 60660)

    Description — the Chicago YCC’s social network event after the ACS April dinner meeting held at Loyola University Chicago, connecting younger chemists with the greater Chicago ACS chapter.

    (3) "Find your path in Academia, Industry, or Government"      Date: 7:30-830pm, April 24th, 2017

    Location:  Lecture Room 138-SES, University of Illinois Chicago  (845 West Taylor Street)

    Description — The Employment Committee in collaboration with the Younger Chemist Committee will be hosting a series of workshop presentations related to career options and planning. The programs will be video streamed to UIC from a host site. Each program will be about 45 minutes, followed by questions.

    (6) Guided tour at Fermilab   Date: July 1st, 2017, noon-3pm

    EVERYONE is invited for this tour! However advanced reservation with us is required. Travel to Batavia for a free private guided tour of Fermilab known as America's National Laboratory and employing 1,750 employees including scientists and engineers from around the world. Following the tour, the group will dine at the Country House in Geneva (2095 S Kirk Rd, Geneva, IL 60134) for a self pay lunch.

    Description —Three-hour workshop that provides women with the knowledge and skills for negotiating salaries and benefits in order to receive fair and realistic compensation as they approach the job market. In collaboration with the American Association of University Women, Chicago Section of the American Chemical Society's Women Chemists, and the Employment Committees. The workshop includes a light breakfast, lunch and resume review by ACS career Consultants. Open to all women!

     

    (11) "Electronic Networking" career workshop                                       Date: December (specific time TBD)

    Description —Three-hour workshop that provides women with the knowledge and skills for negotiating salaries and benefits in order to receive fair and realistic compensation as they approach the job market.     The Young Chemists Committee aims to attract young people to a profession in the chemical sciences, provide leadership for career development opportunities for young scientists in the chemical sciences, promote and recognize the professional accomplishments of young chemists, and hold activities that are of personal and professional interest to young chemists.
